Summary:

Hunzinger Construction Company completed the historical renovation and rehabilitation of the former George Ziegler Candy Company at 223 N. Water Street. The size and location of the building presented many unique challenges for the Hunzinger Team. Challenging exterior renovations included sandblasting the exterior brick of the 23-foot narrow building. Situated on the shore of the Milwaukee River, the location of the building also required Hunzinger to utilize excavation techniques. Excavation to the rear of the building was done with cranes loaded atop barges. While floating on top of one barge, the crane lifted materials to be hauled away onto another barge.

In addition to these challenges, Hunzinger also needed to ensure that all of its renovations to the building, located in the Historic Third Ward, were approved by the Historical Committee of the Third Ward. Interior rehabilitation to the 50,000 square foot building included total interior demolition and renovation including new windows. The remodel building will serve as an office building with a restaurant on the first floor.
