Milwaukee County Zoological Gardens – New West Parking Lot is located at 10001 West Blue Mound Road on the far west side of the Milwaukee County Zoo. Hunzinger Construction Company was hired as Construction Manager for this $1.8 million relocation of a 700 car parking lot that is being displaced by the I-94 Zoo Interchange Renovation Project.
The architects on the project are PGAV Destinations, global leaders in planning and design of entertainment destinations with The Sigma Group of Milwaukee serving as Civil Engineers.
The work consisted of massive grading and earthwork with extensive segmental block retaining wall construction to accommodate grade differences between the parking lot and the surrounding grades. This was done to minimize disturbance of the surrounding wooded areas. Retaining walls on the parking lot side were built with railings.
Site utility work included storm sewer inlets, storm piping, catch basins, installation of a new WE Energies service, electrical abandonments, routing of electrical to existing billboards and future electrical conduit installations.
The lot will has asphalt pavement and is surrounded by sidewalks. There will be a new curb and gutter surrounding the perimeter of the parking lot, parking lot islands and along the edges of the access drive.
A clay lined, wet detention basin at the South end of the parking lot was constructed to provide both peak flow control and storm water treatment.
