A couple of historic rainfalls couldn’t keep our incredible Hunzinger Field Force from completing the Starbuck K8 International Baccalaureate World School on time! Superintendent Dan Parente led the final push along with Senior Project Manager Kevin Johnson, Senior Project Manager Brent Verhyen and Assistant Project Manager Mario Gonzalez. PX Scott Wendt led the project management effort on the $40.5 million in renovations and additions to the school.
On Thursday, August 29th the Racine Unified School District and Starbuck School held a ribbon cutting and open house where families had the chance to tour Starbuck’s newly constructed and remodeled classrooms and new gymnasium. Attending and speaking at the ceremony were RUSD School Superintendent Soren Gajewski, Racine Mayor Cory Mason, and Principal of Starbuck Sara Wroblewski. Hunzinger had a large presence at the event as did project designers Zimmerman Architectural Studios. There were hundreds of students and family members in attendance, and they all seemed super excited for the school year to begin.
The citizens within the Racine Unified School District passed a $600 million referendum by 5 votes to make all these projects possible. As a result, the RUSD wanted to ensure that RUSD residents and businesses were benefitting from the projects. They set a 20% RUSD boundary worker goal and we exceeded that with 25% of the workers residing within the district. Four Youth Apprentices from RUSD High Schools were hired to work on the project as were 19 RUSD Apprentices. All local workforce, local contracting and diverse business goals were exceeded.
Hats off to the incredible project team who spent countless hours, especially over the last weeks and weekends of our very short summer to get the job done!
