Basilica of Saint Josaphat is located at 2333 South 6th Street in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, and is one of 62 minor basilicas found in the United States. Its grandeur and opulence is an excellent example of the so-called Polish Cathedral style of church architecture found in the Midwest. Modeled after St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, it features one of the largest copper domes in the world. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a designated Milwaukee Landmark. Hunzinger has had the privilege of serving as construction manager for their not-for-profit foundation on multiple renovation projects, working alongside Uihlein Wilson Architects.
Our work has included the exterior restoration of the Basilica, completed in 1994. This restoration and renovation included recladding of the entire copper roof, replacement of the protective glazing on the stained glass windows and the addition of much needed amenities and access for the elderly and physically challenged. In 1997, our team completely restored the Basilica’s glorious interior. The interior work included restoring murals, columns and Austrian leaded stained glass windows. The Pope John Paul II Visitors’ Center and gift shop, completed in the Great Jubilee year of 2000, provides easy access for the physically challenged.
