Westlawn Gardens Residential Revitalization is a 75 acre public housing neighborhood located between North 60th and North 68th Streets and Silver Spring Drive on Milwaukee’s northwest side. Hunzinger was selected by the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee to serve as their Construction Manager for this major neighborhood transformation that was designed by Torti Gallas and Partners, Inc., of Washington D.C and Kindness Architecture and Planning, located in Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward.

Westlawn’s redevelopment includes an aesthetically and economically diverse mix of housing and services that replaces outdated barracks style public housing units. Construction has finished on the first 250 units which includes 94 one-bedroom units in two mid-rise multi-family apartment buildings and 156 family units that range from two to five bedrooms. The infrastructure upgrades for the 37-acre east side of Westlawn Gardens consists of improved storm water management, energy efficiency, and new park and garden space. Westlawn Gardens has received numerous local and national awards in addition to achieving Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design for Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND) Stage 3 Silver certification, placing it at the top of an elite group of LEED certified developments that emphasize sustainability. As the world’s first LEED-ND Stage 3 Silver certified project, it is the highest-rated neighborhood under current LEED standards Second Stage 3 LEED-ND certification in the world.

The success of this project’s multiple LEED certifications is a testimony to Hunzinger’s Sustainable Directors’ knowledge and skill with all LEED rating systems and his ability to lead a project team through the process of certification. His expertise and skill with all LEED rating systems from start to finish was an invaluable resource and the reason for this project’s elite certifications.
